Edfu Travel Guide/Horus Temple. Edfu Temple is one of the most visually beautiful and well preserved Temples to be found in Egypt. Edfu was the Centre of the cult of three Gods, who were Horus of Behalet, Hathor and their Son, Hor-Sama-Tawy. Ancient Greek documents refer to Edfu as Apollopolis Magna, reason is that the Greeks associated Horus with their God Apollo. Broadly considered to be the most striking of ALL OF THE Nile Sided Temples along the journey between Luxor and Aswan.Being a mandatory stop by all of the Cruise Ships that make the trip, which also includes stops at Esna and Kom Ombo. Built during the Greco Roman period the Temple of Edfu is a late construction the same as at Esna, but the builders were meticulous to still preserve the form of Egypt’s 1 Pharaohs. A visit to Edfu will allow you to see what all of the other ruined Temples around Egypt could have looked like had they been constructed Two Thousand Years later. Located in the Centre of the Town of Edfu stands the Temple of Horus. By the Nineteenth Century, the Village expanded into the Temple with some Houses actually standing on the Roof of the Sand filled Temple. The constructions have now been removed, but the excavation is still very obvious since the surrounding constructions look down into the Temple Complex, which lies several meters below the Modern Ground Level. The Temple being completed, includes a Pylon which was constructed by the Father of Cleopatra in the First Century BC, this leads into a Peristyle Court and then onto a Hypostyle Hall that paves the way to the Sanctury of Horus, the first and foremost important section of the Temple. This all copies the the standard arrangement of a New Kingdom Pylon Temple, the remnants which can be seen at many more Sites around Luxor and along The Nile Valley. The Temple of Horus at Edfu is by far the most complete example of this style of architecture.
