The Hanging Church / Coptic Cairo History of the Hanging Church and when it was Built? The Hanging Church is one of the most famous and Oldest Coptic Monuments in Egypt. Renowned for it’s rare archetectual Style makes The Church one of the most beautiful Churches in the Middle East. The Hanging Church which is in the Old Cairo District of St. George lies close to the Ezra Synagogue and the Amr Ibn Al-Aas Mosque. The Church represents the first patriotical Seat in Cairo since the Sixteenth Patriotical who was known as Christodulos, who commandeered the Church for his headquarters, also many patrioticals from the eleventh and twelth Centuries were buried in the Church and many Trials of Priests and Bishops were performed within the Church, being a distinctive and prominent Site, plus being a meeting point for Civilizations and Religions it held the Name of The Complex in reference to the meeting point of the three Heavenly Religions. The Church of the Virgin Mary which is also known as the Hanging Church is one of the most famous Sites in Coptic Caior, it acquired the name because it was constructed on the top of the Walls of the fourth Century BC Roman Fortress of Babylon, the remnants of which can still be seen about Coptic Ciaro. However the effect is crucially declined in the present day due to the fact that the ground level has risen by over thirty feet over the Centuries which is because of accumulations of dust and rubbish, orginially the Church towered above it’s settings of the high Walls of the Fortress. The Church which is dated from the Nineth Century is thought to have been first inhabited by the Church as early as the third Century AD, which made this one of the Oldest Christian Religious Sites in Egypt, also considered to be the most beautiful of the Old Churches within the Area, however a nineteenth Century Portico which was constructed onto the front of the Church hides some of the beauty. Inside the Portico the thirteenth Century Façade of the Church can still be seen. The elaborate interior is covered in Ivory and Bone inlaid designs which seems to be the case that the geometric and organic forms are depicted of Islamic Art. Coptic Cairo. Coptic Cairo is a distinctive Area along with Old Cairo that has an assembly of Christian Churches and other Sites that date from the Centuries between the decline of the Pharaonic Religion and the entering of Islam when Egypt had a Christian majority. Coptic Cairo is largly constructed around the Fort of Babylon upon the remnants of its Walls. The Coptic Museum which is in this Area hosts the largest collection of Coptic Christian Artwork and Artifacts in the World. Discovered in 1910, the Museum records Coptic History from the arrival of Christianity in Egypt throughout the Ottoman Era, displaying a combination of Artwork which was influenced by Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman Traditions. Within the Area you will find there are also Six Churches that date back to the early Christian Era. These include The Hanging Church, or The Church of The Virgin Mary, which was constructed in the nineth Century to hang high upon the Walls of Babylon. The effect of this hanging has now reduced dramatically as ground levels have risen around the Walls. Further on into Coptic Cairo there are several more Older Churches, including the Church of St.Sergius, which dates from the fifthe Century and was apparently built upon the Site of a Crypt where The Holy Family, Jesus, Mary and Joseph took shelter during their time in Egypt. Even further back is the Ben Ezra Synagogue , which is the oldest Synagogue in Cairo, discovered in the nineth Century on what is claimed to be either the Site of The Temple of Jeremiah or the Site where the Daughter of the Pharaoh discovered Moses among the Reeds.
