Unfinished Obelisk
Unfinished Obelisk
The Unfinished Obelisk is more than 3,500 Years old. The Obelisk which was to be for Queen Hatchepsut was built from the Stones in the quarries in Aswan. The obelisk would have been 140 feet in Height and 1100 Tons in weight making it the heaviest Obelisk to ever be cut in Ancient Egypt. The method for extracting the large Stone Blocks was to set fire to the surface of the Rock and the bottom through special Pits, then in the final cut the pits were filled with wood and water so the Stone expanded and separated. Unfortunately it was abandoned because cracks started to appear in the Obelisk so the journey of the Obelisk which would have been transported by boat to Karnak Temple in Luxor via the River Nile could not be made. So the Unfinished Obelisks still lies in the quarry in Aswan Today.
