Alexandria Attractions places to visit. The City of Alexandria is the Second Largest City after Cairo in Egypt. It is located on thew Meditteranean Coast on the Northern edge of the Nile Delta. Founded by Alexandria the Great who entered Egypt with his Army and turned the small Port of Rhakotis by the Sea into Alexandria the Great Capital. Alexandria remains a beautiful City with its access to the fabulous Beaches of the Meditteraenean, THE LIBRARY OFF ALEXANDRIA. Founded in the 3rd Century B C the Great Library of Alexandria is considered to be one of the greatest achievements of Ancient Alexandria. The Bibliotheca Alexandria is a remarkable example of 21st Century Architecture. The Modern Complex has a stunning main Reading Room and storage space for approx.. 9 Million Books. It also contains several smaller and specialized Libraries, Art Galleries for exhibitions a Conference Centre and Planetarium. ALEXANDRIA CATACOMBS OF KOM EL SHUQAFA The Tombs of Kom El Shuqafa contain a large number of Graves, including Animal and Human remains which was a mass execution carried out by the Roman Emperor Caracalla in 215 AD. The Catacombs are placed around a Central Spiral Staircase which leads to several Levelsa. The lower levels are inaccessible but the Areas that are accessible show the walls of the Tombs decorated with a fusion of Roman, Egyptian and Greek illustrations which gives an insight into the era of their construction. QUITBAY CITADEL ALEXANDRIA. The Fortress built by Sultan Quitbay during the 14th Century was to defend Alexandria from the Ottoman Empire.Unfortunatley his plan failed and the Ottomans took control of Egypt in 1512. The Fortress tho has has remained located on a piece of land which extends into the Alexandria Harbour. The Fortress is not in the original form as it was badly damaged during the British bombardement of Alexandria. Qaitbay decided to build the Fortress in this location to take advantage of the foundations which originally stood on the site of the legendary Pharos Lighthouse. MONTAZAH PARK ALEXANDRIA. The ruler of the Khedivale of Egypt and Sudan Khedive Abbas II built Montazah on the Coastline of Alexandria as a Summer Residence. There were two Palaces within the grounds , the first one being Al Salamlik which was built in 1892 and was used as a Hunting Lodge for the Khedive and his friends. Since the Officers Revolution in 1952 the ruling Family were removed from power. The Gardens are now a very attractive Public Seaside Park well maintained and a very peaceful place to take a walk and relax. In the 1970s the Palace was refurbished and used as an official residence during the Summer Months.
